Brown Spots

Brown spots, also known as liver spots or lentigo, are lesions caused by chronic exposure to sunlight. For the most part they are benign lesions. Staying out of the sun, wearing a hat and applying sunscreen every two hours while outside will help prevent the formation of sun spots. Once formed, medical treatment is necessary to remove the pigmentation. These include bleaching creams, lasers such as Intense Pulse Light or Q-Switched Alexandrite, or chemical peels. Bleaching creams include hydroquinone 4%, Tri-Luma or the Obagi system. They must be used every night for several months to result in a noticeable improvement. Bleaching creams in combination with chemical peels work great at reducing the pigmentation. Chemical peels include glycolic peels, Jessner's peel or even TCA peels. Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is great for removing brown and red spots and improving the texture and tone of the skin. Although there are many different modalities of dealing with pigmentation, each has its benefits and advantages. Please come in and see Dr. Behnam to discuss the various treatment methods and to see which option is the best for you.
